Work-related eye injuries are not limited to those working in the landscaping, construction, and machinery repair industries. In today’s hi-tech society, employees spend a majority of their time staring at a computer screen, making them more susceptible to vision problems. For this reason, it pays to take measures that ensure you can maintain clear and healthy eyesight. Spectrum Eye Care, the premier specialist in LASIK eye surgery, shares some best practices here.

.Follow the 20-20-20 rule. This means for every 20 minutes of screen time, you’ll take a 20-second break by looking at an object 20 feet away. Continuous exposure to the blue light emitted by a PC screen can put a strain on your eyes, after all. But with this simple rule–and a quick stroll around the office–you can give your eyes a break and refresh your mind with a change of scenery.

.Schedule an eye exam. Visit your optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. Do this whether or not you’re experiencing symptoms associated with an eye condition, such as blurred vision, dry eyes, eye strain, or headaches. With a prompt eye examination, you can get an accurate diagnosis and head off any developing vision problems.

.Adjust your computer screen. Place it 20 or 26 inches away from your eyes and slightly below eye level for better comfort. Make sure the screen is away from a direct source of light, as well. Is the text on your screen difficult to read? Adjust its size so you can read and focus on it comfortably.

.Keep blinking. When you’re staring at a digital screen for too long, it can cause your eyes to dry out. Close them regularly and keep them moist and lubricated.
